Background

Local Food Dinners is a service designed to bring commnities together to celebrate their diveristy and local food. Illich writes of ‘conviviality’ being a key factor contributing to sustainable lifestyles. “I believe that a desirable future depends on our deliberately choosing a life of action over a life of consumption, on our engendering a lifestyle which will enable us to be spontaneous, independent, yet related to each other through convivial moments”. Conviviality is defined as being fond of feasting, drinking, and good company; sociable. The fabric of our communities depends on us being interconnected and enjoying each others company. This is why Local Food Dinners is a key Sustainability Service we offer.

Benefits

Social

Bringing community together is a key social benefit of the Local Food Dinners. Meeting each other and learning each others names and stories helps to build the fabric of the community which in turn will address other sustainability focussed issues together.

Economic

Local Food Dinners connect people to local enterprises. We use all local food and we also connect local business people who create opportunities with one another. The American Planning Institute as states that creating a sense of place in communities will increase property prices.

Environmental

As all of the food we source is from the local area there is low mileage in the food. All food waste is also composted in the local community garden or is taken away to a centralised location for composting. We pride ourselves on waste wise and ecologically friendly events.

Process

The design process is focussed on engaging the local community around particular themes that our client would like to focus on. We can work with the community to design the local dinner, or we can design the dinner independently. We source local food, engage local people and theme the dinner in a way that our client requests. Our dinners are waste wise events and have a very strong focus on social sustainability.
