Workshops Program

How it works

Programs will be run on a bookings basis. This means we can offer a program booking for a group (5+) or run a program once we have a request for 5 or more people wishing to do the workshop.

To Book

Select a workshop, select a date and email clare@urbanreforestation.com. Clare will get back to you with an answer to any question or to book you in. If your desired date or workshop is not available, email Clare your desired date/workshop and we will advertise this workshop. Please note: programs require a minimum of five people to run. Programs are run at our Eco-Shop in the Docklands.

Programs require a min 5 people to run. We will endeavour to run each program at a time/day that suits the majority of attendees wanting to partake.

In May Urban Reforestation will be hosting some free gardening and balcony gardening workshops for Docklands residents, thanks to the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund.


Balcony and roof top gardens
Thursday 5th May 6.30pm-8pm

Learn to grow a garden for balconies and roof tops. We will explain how water wise balcony and rooftop garden involves the collection and storage of rainwater, soil health, maintenance techniques and the selection of plants to create healthy and beautiful gardens.

Topics: pots and containers, soils, composts, plant propagation, vertical gardens, edible water features.


Intro to Organic Gardening
Sunday 1st May – 1pm – 3pm

Meet friends, plant trees and create positive visions for the future.


Compost and worms

Duration: 1hrs

Cost: FREE, thank you to the Target 3008 Project and the Victorian Government’s Sustainability Fund and City of Melbourne!

Composting will improve the garden regardless of soil type. It helps build soil structure, retain moisture and provides nutrients. Composting is the art of producing a rich, sweet smelling decomposed product rather than a wet, smelly, fly attracting, rotting mess. Whatever your backyard, courtyard, apartment or office composting style, the recipe for making good compost is the same – getting the carbon, nitrogen mix right.

Pickles, ferments and sprouts

Duration: 2hrs

Cost: $35 per person

An introduction to the science and art of traditional culturing and making your own sauerkraut, kimchis, sourdoughs and sprouts. The workshop will give an overview of the process of preparing delicious, homemade, fermented and sprouted creations for great health benefits and an enjoyable experience of community. Eating foods grown in one’s own soil and fermented in one’s own kitchen frees us financially and nourishes our family and local community.

Topics: Sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, yoghurt, labna, kefir, sprouts.


Green home makeover

Duration: 2hrs

Cost: $30 per person

A make-it-yourself guide to a safe and environmentally conscious home. We show you how to transform your house into a healthy eco-haven. Natural cleaning products are a simple and easy option, particularly DIY solutions made with combination of lemon, vinegar, table salt and bi-carb soda. In this workshop you can learn to shop ethically for products with green credentials.

Bread Making

Duration: 2hrs

Cost: $35 per person

Save some dough, make some bread and have fun at the same time!

Topics: Sourdoughs, yeasts, flat breads, gluten free, sprouted loaves, sourdough pastries.


Repair your own clothes and jewellery

Duration: 2hr

Cost: $30

We cover the basics of how to do basic repairs of your jeans, socks, small rips and tears. Your clothes are easily fixed and will give them some extra life. Broken earings and necklances are easily fixed if you have the right know how and can even open you up to design and make your own fashion items. We’ll get you bring along your mendable items.


Childrens introduction to gardening

Duration: 1hr

Cost: $10 per child

Introduction and tour of the garden for children, to give them a few basic ideas around what it is to grow your own food. One hour will occupy even the most inquisitive of minds and includes actually planting their very own seedlings to take home and watch grow. Kindergarten and play groups welcome.


Carlas Community Kids

Duration: 1hr

Cost: $10

An educational and interactive “sustainable story-time” for children and their families to engage in sustainable lifestyles. The author and illustrator of Carla’s Community, Emily and Penelope will run activities such as a reading and a signing of their newly published book “Carla’s Community; A Day in Greenslopes”), colouring in session and question time. “It is never too early to engage children’s energy and curiosity in the natural world.
